YEARLY REVIEW OF STUDENT PROGRESS

At the end of each academic year, the Graduate Review Committee (GRC) will evaluate the academic record of each student and make formal recommendations regarding the student's academic progress. At the end of the first year of graduate study, the GRC may make the following recommendations:

  • the student is encouraged to complete the requirements for the Ph.D.;
  • the student is advised to continue only as far as the M.A.;
  • the student is advised not to continue in the graduate program.

Students who successfully qualify for Ph.D. work will continue to be reviewed by the GRC at the end of each academic year. The GRC will be responsible for making appropriate recommendations regarding the student's academic progress to the student and her advisor.

Policy of Probation and Mechanism for Appeal

  • Any student failing to meet the normal criteria for satisfactory progress will be notified in writing by the GRC that he or she has been placed on probation unless the Committee believes there are mitigating circumstances. A student who continues on probation for two consecutive semesters will ordinarily be dropped from the program. However, in special circumstances (e.g., serious illness) the student may appeal his or her dismissal in writing to the GRC. The Committee will inform the student in advance of its deliberations so that the student may submit any material in his or her favor.
  • A student may be removed from probation by resolving the deficiencies which caused him or her to be so placed.

Leaves of Absence

  • All requests for leaves of absence must be submitted to the Department in writing.
  • Any student who takes a leave of absence other than for medical reasons must apply formally for re-admission to the Department.

Part-Time Students

  • Permission to maintain part-time status must be requested in writing from the student's major advisor or from the Director of Graduate Studies.
  • Part-time students will be expected to finish the M.A. within four years and to complete their preliminary examinations within eight years.
